Japanese scientists have devised a robotic exoskeleton that is being used to help foot weary Buddhists complete an ancient pilgrimage in the footsteps of a famous saint.

The Walk-Mate, as it is called, is an arrangement of motors and braces that are strapped to the legs and shoulders of users. By moving in sync with the movement of arms and legs, they impart some of their power to the walker, set a regular rhythm and relieve the burden on sick or elderly people.

The apparatus has been used in hospitals and clinics since 2018 to help patients whose ability to walk has been affected by Parkinson’s disease. Now the Walk-Mate is being tested for use outdoors, and offered to participants in the 750-mile pilgrimage to
