Honda has introduced the latest version of its Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV), and it now includes a lot more cargo capacity. The company said it tested the second-generation AWV on a solar construction site and used the results to build in multiple enhancements for version three.

The AWV now features a larger bed capable of carrying two pallets and up to 2,000 pounds. Since it’s autonomous, it also features LiDAR sensors for better navigation in spots where the global navigation satellite system is either not strong enough or not available at all.

Honda has also increased the speed of the AWV when it’s in "autonomous mode," so it can now reach up to 10 miles per hour (mph) while boosting the battery size to take the operating time up to 10 hours. The company said the AWV includes an advanced avoidance function for other vehicles and a cargo bed that’s lower to the ground for easier loading and unloading.

The Honda AWV can be run autonomously or operated via remote control. It includes a mobile interface that allows users to program routes for the vehicle. The company intended it for industries that are facing labor shortages. Despite its capabilities and substantial cargo capacity, the AWV has a relatively small footprint, which likely makes it easier for the vehicle to navigate construction sites. The AWV is about 10 feet long, four feet wide, and seven feet tall.

Honda said it’s currently seeking companies to field test the AWV and that it’s looking into developing tools and attachments that would equip the vehicle for more than just moving cargo.
